Let me rant a little bit here:
So I just finished one of Chuck Palahniuk’s novels Snuff, which primarily provides a satirical outlook on women and their roles in society. Of course throughout the book he touched base on the subject of Marilyn Monroe numerous times.
I understand that she was and still is really a force to be reckoned with. But that doesn’t mean that I have my problems with the image that she conveyed.
One thing that women, particularly young women admire about her is her size. Often time you see posts with her picture and someone saying something along the lines of “This is what a real woman should look like, size 12 and proud of it!”. The only thing being Marilyn was far more self conscious about her size and looks than most people could imagine. For instance to achieve that grinding, sexual saunter of hers she would cut on heel shorter than the other so her hips would literally grind. Also she was known to take more than the occasionally ice bath. In fact she often refused to even go out in public without taking one. Now lets think about this for a second. She was so concerned with how she looked that she would literally risk hypothermia for beauty.
My point being that, a persons image is their own worst enemy. And no one is without flaws. I’m not saying Marilyn was not a someone to admire (okay maybe just a little bit). But I am saying that before we make assumptions that women (especially women in Hollywood) have flawless confidence levels, think again.
Us women need to realize the strains society have put on us to look picture perfect no matter that detrimental effects it may have on our own well-being.
